When your practical driving test is getting close, you need to decide which vehicle you will use. Your own car can be a good choice when you know it well and it is test-ready. An instructor’s vehicle can be useful when you want a reliable learner car and a structured warm-up before the assessment.
When your own car makes sense
If most of your practice has been in the same family or personal vehicle, you already know the brake feel, steering response, mirrors and controls. That familiarity can reduce test-day nerves.
Your own car may also cost less, but it needs to be suitable for the assessment. Check tyres, lights, indicators, mirrors, wipers, seatbelts, warning lights and fuel well before the appointment. Do not leave basic vehicle checks until the morning of the test.
When an instructor car can help
An instructor vehicle can remove some uncertainty if you do not have access to a suitable car or if you want professional preparation immediately before the test. The biggest advantage is not that the vehicle guarantees a better result. It is that you can combine the car with a warm-up lesson and focused feedback.
If you plan to use an instructor car, practise in that vehicle before the assessment. Changing to an unfamiliar car at the test centre can make braking, steering and parking feel different.
Ask which car helps you drive most naturally
Your decision should be based on where you are most consistent. Choose the vehicle in which you can comfortably:
- operate all controls without searching for them;
- brake and accelerate smoothly;
- judge the vehicle’s width and turning circle;
- complete parking manoeuvres confidently;
- maintain good observation while driving.
Plan the vehicle early
Confirm your test-day vehicle before the final week. That gives you time to practise in it, correct any mechanical issue and organise transport to and from the test location.
